a huge storm rolled through on Friday afternoon, cancelling all soccer games on Saturday due to wet fields. so with the games cancelled, we all headed up to Sringdale to cheer on Chris during his second half marathon, the Hogeye.
we checked in for the race, ate dinner, then checked in to the hotel for a night of SWIMMING!
the kids loooved this hotel. it was a holiday inn, but they'd never been to one that was set up like this. plus, we were on the top floor and the halls all faced the center of the open hotel and they thought it was super scary ie exciting!
before swimming we had a quick ice cream party. Charlie and Owen ate it in the nude. whatever. boys will be boys.
after a very long sleepless night, I dropped Chris off at the race!
the kids and I then got ready, grabbed some donuts and hot cocoa
the hot cocoa was a serious highlight for them!
then we set up shop and cheered for the runners. with 15-20 mph winds and temps around 30, it was beyond freezing! luckily the temps didn't seem to bother Chris once the race started, but that head-on wind sure got to him during a couple miles of the race.

Chris came in at 1 hour 39 minutes! he had hoped to train harder before hand, but just didn't have the time, plus he got sick earlier in the week with a cold. so he went with the hopes of beating his last time of 1:44.
he came in 17th out of 700+ half marathoners!!! he was 4th for his age group, just missing the podium by under a minute. next time!
so proud of this guy!
on our drive up north we were following the big storms in the area. about 20 minutes north of fort smith we came upon some serious wreckage for several miles. turns out a tornado had touched down and tore the place up. these pictures were taken on the drive home the next day. they do not do it justice.
huge metal signs were twisted and knocked over or ripped to pieces. entire hillsides of trees were flattened. giant barns were shredded and scattered. there had been road barriers down the interstate for some work and they were thrown into trees and all over the hillsides. we couldn't believe how far spread the damage had occurred. it was a massive area. it was impressive and humbling. we later heard that no one had been killed, thank goodness. but one woman in a storm shelter did go into labor and had a baby... welcome to the world, little one!
