summer vacation 2021: Devil's Tower, Sturgis, & Mt Rushmore

we were in a bit of a hurry to get home so jack could get to soccer try outs for the high school team, but we made a few fun stops along the journey.

we had a wonderful time at Devil's Tower. I've heard mixed reviews about it from friends and family, but we really enjoyed it!

while we were there, a man was hiding somewhere in the rocks ands singing some Native American songs that echoed all around the tower while we hiked. most of the visitors were quiet while hiking. it was a pretty cool experience! and we even came upon some little deer during our hike too!

we stayed the night in Deadwood South Dakota, death place of Wild Bill Hicock and Calamity Jane. Deadwood is on the way to Sturgis, which was happening the next day, so we spent the night with hundreds of bikers.... made the older kids uncomfortable, but Owen ate it up!

we also stopped at Mt Rushmore! it was cool to say we went, but honestly... it wasn't as impressive as we all thought it would be. it was smaller than we imagined

also in South Dakota, we stopped to stretch our legs at the tourist trap that is Wall Drug.

and we stopped in Wisconsin for some fried cheese curds...

... a couple different times hahaha!

and Chicago was a traffic nightmare! obviously it was just a quick drive through and we shouldn't judge a city by one quick pass, but man, we don't really have much desire to go back to Chicago.

our deep dish pizzas cost an arm and a leg and they were burnt. mine was solid black on the bottom.

but it was good to get out of the car for a little bit, even though we got yelled at by a chicagoan (is that what they're called???) for parking our car.

it was a long couple days in the car

but we made it home!
this was everything we packed in our roof carrier!

Idaho, we love and miss you!!!
although, I had a weird allergy out there that irritated my eyes more than anything I've ever experienced before and it took a solid two months for my eyes to recover. besides that, we all want to be back there asap! good thing we get to see grandma and grandpa this Christmas!!!
