grandma linda came for a visit from august 8-24th!
all is right in the world when grandma is near!
we spent the first few days just being with grandma and doing things like
watching tv... with grandma
going to the library... with grandma
getting school stuff... with grandma
you get the idea
that weekend, since it was our last weekend before school started, we took a little trip to Pawhuska, OK.
why go to Pawhuska, OK?
the pioneer woman's store and restaurant called The Mercantile is in Pawhuska.
if you don't like food, you may not appreciate the following photos. we gorged ourselves. thats the best way to describe our 24 hours in oklahoma.
the first thing we did was work our way to the upstairs bakery for a few treats
a purple butterfly sugar cookie for owen, lemon bar for ellie, rainbow rice crispy treat for charles, and danishes and brownies for the rest of us.
everything from the bakery was superb!
then we wandered around the merc before getting in line for dinner.
chris was awesome and waited in line for us while the rest of us hung out in the store. they have a little corner with kids toys, both downstairs and upstairs. so grandma and i watched the kids play happily while chris waited outside in line. they had people walking around the line, offering cold water bottles and ice cream bars to those in line. pretty great customer service! if i remember right, chris only waited for about an hour.
out of all the things that we ate, jack and i keep talking about the lemonades. the jars were ginormous and they refilled them so quickly. blueberry and blackberry lemonade. it truly was awesome! and that was only the drinks!
grandma had the chicken fried steak and i had the lasagna
owen had the mac n cheese. maybe we should call it the cheese with a little mac!
we sampled the olive cheese bread, french onion soup and the queso for appetizers
jack had the marlboro man sandwich
ellie ordered the nachos... look at that plate! haha
needless to say, we had a few leftovers!
we sat right by the window next to the line outside. owen entertained the kids in line by making lots of faces. here's a sampling:
after dinner we walked down the main street, hoping to find a magnet for our growing magnet collection from places we've visited. nothing was open (it was only 5:30), but one nice old couple told us to check out the old swinging bridge. so we did!
there aren't any hotels in town, so we had to stay about 30 minutes away. our hotel rooms were nothing fancy, but they were clean. well, clean enough... one of the rooms smelled like old cigarette smoke... so we made the kids sleep in it while chris, grandma and i took the fresh one haha!
the next morning we headed back to the merc for breakfast. we got there a little after 7 and there was already a line. i think we waited longer for breakfast than we did for dinner.
owen's faces lately are golden.
none of us minded waiting in line.
most of us tried edna mae's pancakes (which tasted 100 times better than the ones I've tried to make at home from her cookbook), while chris had a breakfast burrito, and jack had crunchy croissant french toast. everything was sooo yummy.
the salted caramel syrup was heavenly.
after breakfast we headed out to the drummond lodge where ree films her shows. it was beautiful and so fun to be where she cooks!
we stopped in tulsa on the way home for some bbq and a potty break. and maybe even stopped at andy's afterwards for some custard.
it was a great trip! so glad grandma was able to be there with us for one last hurrah before school started on the 15th!!!

Man oh man, I don't think I've ever been so hungry... and it's eleven o'clock at night. Thanks so much for the tantalizing picture and their delectable descriptions. Going to "the merc" is now on my list of things to do before I die!
