spring break 2018: THE FOOD

this post is not going to be in chronological order because:
A) the pics uploaded out of order and im too lazy to organize them
and
B) food is so magical, it doesn't have to be in order
ok, so it's mostly because i dont feel like organizing all the photos haha! so many times we remember a certain meal or treat from a trip, but can't recall the name of the restaurant where we enjoyed it. so ive been thankful for the times that ive been able to look back at the blog and find little details like that. thats kinda why i wanted to make a post like this with what we had and where because food is such a big part of our family trips. we love food!

one thing i want to mention before i get started is that we seem to pick a snack that we consume a lot of on our road trips. sometimes its beef jerky. some times its redvines. this trip it was bit o honey's. it was a great little pick me up while in the middle of nowhere oklahoma.

our kids really enjoy in-n-out (and we do too!), so naturally we stopped there for lunch in Dallas on our way down to San Antonio.

those nifty hats are a must, no matter how quickly they get crushed in the tangle of kids and toys and pillows on the rest of the drive!

we ate
SO. MANY. TACOS.
when in rome right?
or i guess in this case,
when in san antonio :)

this restaurant was recommended to us by chris' old roommate, brandon. its called Acenar and its on the river downtown.

this was our second round of tacos on the trip. the food was pretty good, not our favorite, but it was fun to be on the river. plus, there were pigeons all over, eating chips off the ground and we even saw them hop up onto an empty table next to us to eat chips. kind of gross actually, but it made the kids laugh.

as mentioned in the last post, we ate bbq at Milt's BBQ in Kyle with carrie's family. we got there late, so a lot of the food that we would've liked to try was sold out. but we really enjoyed what we had! plus, the company was phenomenal :)

one night we ate at Mi Tierra at market square with delayna and the kiddos. it was super duper fun! this is where the 3 man mariachi band played for us.
and, you know: tacos!!!

the flour tortillas were so incredibly soft and tender. so, so good.

after we ate at mi terra, we went outside and grabbed some fresh, dulce de leche filled churros!!!

owen, charlie, and lani dont care for churros so they had chocolate donuts from the bakery at mi terra instead.

one morning after dropping chris off at class, i swung by a donut shop called The Art of Donut and surprised the kids along with delayna and leilani who came to the hotel to hang out and play at the playground.
a gourmet hot cocoa was too hard for me to pass up :)

after struggling through eating some scrambled eggs and fruit down stairs at the hotel, the kids finally got to pick out a donut!

another fun treat we had was the night before we left we stopped at Ghirardelli for some ice cream down on the riverwalk!

another fun food stop was for breakfast on our last morning before heading home. we ate at the very old Guenther House. the pumpkin pancakes were superb!

chris definitely didn't go without while he was at his conference each morning. they provided a large breakfast spread each day. one of his favorites that he ate while we had donuts was this fancy french toast.

of course, no trip to texas is complete for our family without a stop ( or two or three!) at torchy's tacos. seriously, that queso is heaven on earth.

one of our very favorite meals of the trip was going to the cheesecake factory. jack has wanted to go for a very long time. and because our student loan pay-off celebration dinner was such a bust, we decided to splurge and have a fancy dinner together on this trip. when the kids saw there was a cheesecake factory in san antonio, they knew this was where they wanted to go!

we were so full that we only had a few bites of cheesecake and then boxed up the rest. it made a great early morning snack the next couple days ;)

we knew we had to try some "puffy tacos" while in san antonio! Henry's puffy tacos is probably a tourist trap, but we really enjoyed those tacos! and the rice was very flavorful (ie not authentic) but we thought it was tasty!

the night before we left, we met up with Chris's old roommate brandon and his family at a bbq place called B-Daddy's BBQ in Helotes. we were pretty impressed! the employees were awesome and extremely kind, especially considering how big our group was. the food was outstanding! its no surprise that it started as a food truck and then turned into a full on restaurant because it was so yummy! im still dreaming of the jalapeƱo cheddar cream corn!!

not pictured but worth mentioning was buc-ee's. its a ginormous gas station. like, the mother of all gas stations. its more like a huge full sized store with probably 50 gas pumps out front. cameron smith told chris he needed to try a taco there, so of course we stopped there to fuel up on our way out of town. we needed more bit o honey's and chris needed a taco... not to mention the car needed gas. when we walked in there was a bbq station where they were literally pulling briskets off a smoker, slicing it up, stacking it in tortillas, wrapping them in foil and handing them out to costumers. was it the best taco ever? no. but it was pretty good and considering the whole experience it was pretty fun!

our last stop was in waco to visit the Silos Bakery.

when we visited waco a few easters ago, the bakery was under construction. it was fun to stop there for an hour or so for a treat and to stretch our legs.

not surprising, the bakery was gorgeous, just like everything joanna gaines touches.

plus, the cookies and cupcakes were delicious!

it probably goes without saying that chris and i have been dieting since we returned from our trip :)
